2021 Skin Care Trends

2021 Skin Care Trends | Gface MD | Wellesley

As the new year starts settling in, so do new skincare trends. Each year, new ingredients and new trends spark the attention of the public. This year will be no different. There is a lot to look forward to this year including personalized skincare, blue light protection, and more!

Personalized skincare-

As seen in the last few years, personalized skincare products are on the rise and will continue to do so throughout 2021. Consumers have loved the concept of a product specifically made to target their skin type and concerns. We saw brands such as Function of Beauty and Curology take off in 2020, and 2021 will be no different.

Sustainable skincare-

In the past few years, we have seen a big push for clean beauty products. In the next year, following this trend, we will see companies pushing for sustainable packaging and products. Keep an eye out for zero-waste product launches as the skincare community strives to do its part.

Celebrity skincare –

By the looks of it, 2021 will be filled with even more celebrity skincare launches. If you are into following pop culture trends, celebrities will continue making their mark on this industry. We have seen the successes of Rihanna’s brand Fenty, and we will continue to see other celebrities follow suit. Recently, we have seen Alicia Keys produce Keys Soulcare, and Pharrell launch his brand, Human Race.

Blue light protection skincare –

In the past year, Americans have spent more time on electronics than ever before. More screen time equals needing more protection from the blue light. As we continue to spend more and more time on our computers, cell phones, and iPads, we need to protect our skin. Research continues to be done on how blue light specifically affects our skin. It is thought that more exposure to blue light can cause premature aging, inflammation, and weakening of the skin.

Maskne Products-

Thank you in 2020 for all the maskne! But seriously, still recovering from the terrors of all the damage the mask left behind. Due to the stress on our skin, skincare companies will be targeting new problems that mask-wearing has caused. We will see a rise in barrier protection products and acne targeting problems.

Microbiome-friendly skincare

As we enter 2021 after a long year of staying safe at home, we realized that less is more when it comes to skincare applications. It is time to get rid of products with harsh ingredients and take a new approach to our skincare routines. This is often termed as “skinimalism” due to the rise of more minimalist skincare routines. In this year, we will see more skincare products targeting rehydrating and destressing. As this trend continues, we will see products containing probiotics and fermented ingredients to restore our skin’s microbiome.
